Oracle Corporation (ORCL) helps businesses manage their IT operations through software, cloud services, and hardware products.

Founded in 1977 by Larry Ellison, Bob Miner, and Ed Oates, Oracle was originally named Software Development Laboratories (SDL).

The company was inspired by a 1970 IBM paper on relational databases. Oracle's first project was a classified job for the CIA, codenamed "Oracle," which later became the name of its flagship product and the company itself. In a clever marketing move, Oracle released its first commercial database as Version 2, even though Version 1 never existed. This product, Oracle V2, was the first to use SQL (Structured Query Language), now the industry standard.

By the 1980s, Oracle had gone public and become one of the fastest-growing tech firms. Larry Ellison was known for his bold and competitive leadership style. Oracle’s rapid rise was driven by innovation, aggressive marketing, and risk-taking. In the 1990s and 2000s, Oracle expanded by acquiring companies like PeopleSoft, Siebel Systems, and JD Edwards, moving beyond databases into full enterprise software. In 2010, the company acquired Sun Microsystems, gaining control of Java and expanding into hardware.

Currently, Oracle's business is divided into three main segments: cloud and license, hardware, and services.
